I starting fighting with the internet around 6:30 am. It got bad. I had to keep reminding myself that throwing my laptop wouldn’t solve the problem.
I was determined to get my writing in shareable form on this website. I couldn’t put my dukes down once they were up. I have a mountain range of fight in me, so here I am at the tail end of the day, wiping the floor — finally — with this task. Check… OMG. My computer just died, and I had to plug it in. This is the exact fight I was in all day long. I’m exhausted by winning. Checkmate.
The official training day started with two hours of CPR. I’ve never taken it, and I was struck that I have to be able to respond to all kinds of crises — bodily crises.
Then we returned to the reservation system training; we went deeper into it’s guts. I’m seeing more now of how everything gets digested and moved into reports and outcomes… It’s a labyrinth. Ha. We had to get up in front of everyone and accomplish basic tasks, and my time featured too long spent looking for phrase that was literally right in front of my face. New platforms are necessarily disorienting of course. How’s my confidence, you ask? Well, one of my assistant managers has used the system before, and a company representative will be on site for our opening weekend. So, I’m feeling just fine about being very green.
I would have spent my evening learning more about the reservation system, but I had to draft the AM/PM Checklists because they are completely unreadable.
Who knew that my document design skills would save me? I mean I try to tell my students how important a readable document is…
In my case, spending time making sense of the different “Live” and “Online” tasks that frame the day was the best way to spend my time. As I explained to the Martha’s Vineyard Manager, we have to have metabolized enough of what was thrown at us to be able to ask good questions of our supervisor on her last day of work: tomorrow. When she goes, we’ll report to who she reported to. Ha. Seriously. Good times.
So, after the work day was “complete,” I headed to this Cafe that I’ve been obsessed with (after stopping by an outdoor Booksale), and started working on the AM/PM Checklists, and wouldn’t you know, it just so happened that dear friend and her amazing kids just happened to walk in. I was elated!
I was about five minutes late to my 7pm meeting with the Martha’s Vineyard manager. We reviewed my draft, then went down to the front desk to consult with the Truro Manager (who’s season starts in late June. She’s working at this Boston hostel for the time being). So we three Cape Cod Managers and a Boston Manager looked at my three documents and talked shop. What??! It was loud but awesome. I belong.
It’s been a whirlwind four days.
Tomorrow, there’s no official meeting, just a meet up time to head down to Hyannis together. We’ll all stay there for the night, and the Martha’s Vineyard team will jump on their ferry on Saturday morning.
Calling it @ 11: 26PM. I’ll go live tomorrow. See you then.
