This morning the same Cafe from yesterday made sense, but only for coffee. I wandered past a place I planned to “a la cart” but ended up with a gorgeous plate of food that was so completely delicious, I struggled to stop shoving it into my mouth as quickly as I could.

I got back to the training room early to work on a document I should have been handed on the first day of class – -no slight to my new, so-far so-fantastic manager.  I’m deeply dialed into business communications (I’ve taught the class 30 times over ten years – shifting and innovating each and every time), so I can’t help but solve the problem. My confidence is exponentially boosted now.

The day was mostly about a platform called CloudBeds, the booking/reservation system.

Oh – this morning, we played a “how to respond to a difficult guest situation” game. Our manager played the guest, and we had take turns responding in front of everyone.

Ha haha. I kept laughing at the guests that were being performed. I was belly laughing, really. Good thing we practiced… not that I would have laughed at anyone, but they really were funny: someone grumpy, childish (trying to break rules), nervous (some guy is staring at me) or just being a pain). The discussions of our responses to each scenario after the live action showed me that I work with a great group of grown ups. Cool.

It was a grueling day of staring at the system’s guts. (What planet did I decide to explore?!)

We ended with an all-staff meeting and a discussion about the outcome of their company wide innovation initiative. I was impressed by this call. It took me some time to hear the “innovation” in the winning ideas they announced; it had only been my second day, so first had to compute the problems the innovations were solving. Situated innovation can take time to appreciate….

Final thoughts: I realized that A hostel is basically: “community engagement meets operations.” This job is weirdly squarely in my lane. Crystal cool.
